Titanium Welding Best Practices
Essential guidelines for welding titanium including preparation, shielding gas requirements, and common techniques.
Cleanliness Requirements
Titanium must be absolutely clean before welding. All contaminants including oil, grease, paint, and marking pencils must be removed. Use acetone or dedicated titanium cleaners.
Shielding Gas Protection
Argon shielding is essential for titanium welding. Both front and back shielding are required to prevent contamination. The weld zone must remain protected until cooled below 800°F (427°C).
Welding Techniques
GTAW (TIG) is the most common method for titanium. Key parameters include proper amperage, travel speed, and filler metal selection matching the base material grade.
Common Defects and Prevention
Porosity, contamination, and cracking can be prevented through proper cleaning, adequate shielding, and controlled heat input. Color of the weld bead indicates quality: silver/straw is acceptable, blue/gray indicates contamination.
